Event Type

Montana Winter Fair is an annual agricultural and Western-culture festival held in Lewistown, Montana, celebrating the state’s farming, ranching, livestock, and rural traditions. Dating to 1946, it combines agricultural competition with winter sports, traditional arts, food, demonstrations, and family activities.

What happens at the fair

The program typically spans 20-plus events at the Fergus County Fairgrounds and other Lewistown venues. Activities have included skijoring, livestock judging and youth beef shows, horse demonstrations, fiddle competitions, quilt and fiber-arts displays, chili and cinnamon-roll contests, animal shows, a Western trade expo, and children’s activities such as a stick-horse rodeo.

Agricultural roots

The timing is closely tied to Montana’s agricultural calendar: January provides many ranchers and farmers a relative lull before calving and lambing season. The fair emphasizes agricultural skills and education rather than functioning solely as entertainment, with livestock competitions, clinics, demonstrations, and youth programs alongside the public festivities.

From Bozeman to Lewistown

The fair originated in Bozeman in 1946 and was held there through 2002 before relocating to Lewistown, near the geographic center of Montana. It is now a nonprofit community undertaking organized by hundreds of Central Montana volunteers, attracting participants from Montana as well as neighboring states.
