The 42nd National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is a six-day celebration of the poetry, music, storytelling and cultural traditions of the American West. Organised by the Western Folklife Center, this annual gathering brings together cowboys, ranchers, poets, musicians, artists and visitors to celebrate the heritage and everyday experiences of rural Western communities.

The 2027 theme, The Big Out There, explores the landscapes, history and cultural traditions of the Owyhee region. Visitors can enjoy live cowboy poetry performances, Western music, storytelling sessions, dance programmes, poetry and music open mics, workshops, films, exhibitions and special discussions.

The event also features a Western Mercantile with regional crafts, artwork, clothing and Western-themed products. Workshops offer opportunities to learn traditional skills, explore creative writing and experience Western culture. The gathering welcomes both experienced performers and visitors interested in discovering cowboy heritage.

The event takes place at several venues throughout Elko, with the Western Folklife Center serving as its central gathering place.
