BNP Paribas Open
The BNP Paribas Open, commonly called Indian Wells, is a major professional hard-court tennis tournament held annually at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California’s Coachella Valley. It combines an ATP Masters 1000 men’s event with a WTA 1000 women’s event and is one of the most prominent tournaments outside the four Grand Slams.
Why Indian Wells stands out
Its combination of elite fields, a large purpose-built venue, desert setting, and extensive fan amenities has earned Indian Wells the nickname “Tennis Paradise.” Stadium 1 holds about 16,100 spectators, while numerous accessible practice courts give fans unusually good opportunities to watch top players train at close range.
Place on the tennis calendar
Played around March, Indian Wells is an important early-season test and traditionally precedes the Miami Open; winning both tournaments is known as completing the “Sunshine Double.” The 2026 edition ran March 4–15, while the next tournament is scheduled for February 28–March 14, 2027.
Recent champions
The tournament regularly attracts the sport’s leading players. Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka captured their first Indian Wells singles titles in 2026; recent champions also include Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Świątek, Mirra Andreeva, Jack Draper, Elena Rybakina, and Taylor Fritz.
Scale and significance
Indian Wells has grown into a particularly large spectator event: 527,626 fans attended in 2026, setting a tournament record. Organizers reported an estimated $887 million economic impact on the Coachella Valley that year, illustrating how the tournament has developed into both a major tennis competition and a significant regional event.
