Kansas City’s 40th Annual Slavic Festival
Kansas City’s Slavic Festival is a two-day heritage celebration in Sugar Creek, Missouri, built around traditional Slavic food, folk music, dancing, arts, and cultural displays. For 2027, Missouri Tourism lists it for June 11–12 at the Mike Onka Community Center, with Grammy-nominated musician Alex Meixner advertised as the headliner. me
There is a numbering discrepancy in current listings. The festival’s 40th-anniversary celebration actually took place in 2026, and contemporary local coverage explicitly called that event the 40th annual festival; Missouri Tourism nevertheless currently titles its June 2027 listing “Kansas City’s 40th Annual Slavic Festival” while describing 2027 as the festival’s 41st year.
Food and culture
Food is a major part of the experience, with festival traditions including povitica, kolache, kielbasa, sarma, goulash, haluski, krompir salata, pilsner and slivovitz. The broader cultural program represents communities including Slovak, Czech, Croatian, Polish, Ukrainian, Slovenian, Serbian, Bulgarian and Belarusian heritage, alongside folk art, traditional clothing and dance.
Festival traditions
The event grew from Sugar Creek’s Slavic immigrant heritage and an earlier parish-picnic tradition associated with St. Cyril’s Church, founded by Slavic immigrants in the community. Traditional festival entertainment combines polkas and other folk music with kolo dancing, costumed dance groups and family activities; recent editions have also featured playful contests such as the kielbasa-eating Sausage Shootout and Cabbage Cup Relay.
