Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama – 2027
The Birthplace of America’s Original Mardi Gras
Mobile Mardi Gras is one of America’s oldest Carnival celebrations, with its origins dating back to 1703 in the historic port city of Mobile, Alabama. Deeply rooted in the city’s history and cultural traditions, this annual celebration brings the community together for weeks of colourful parades, elaborate floats, marching bands, traditional costumes and lively festivities.
The 2027 celebration takes place from January 22 through February 9, culminating on Fat Tuesday. During this festive season, more than 40 parades travel through downtown Mobile and surrounding areas. Spectacular themed floats organised by masked mystic societies, accompanied by marching bands and mounted police, fill the streets with music, colour and excitement.
One of the most beloved traditions is catching souvenirs thrown from the floats, including colourful beads, MoonPies and other festive trinkets. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Carnival balls, parties, music and family-friendly activities, making the celebration an experience for people of all ages.
An important highlight is Joe Cain Day, observed on the Sunday before Fat Tuesday. It honours Joe Cain, who helped revive Mobile’s Mardi Gras celebrations in 1866 after the Civil War by leading a parade through the city.
Visitors can further explore the festival’s fascinating history at the Mobile Carnival Museum, housed in a restored historic mansion. The museum features 14 galleries, video presentations, historical photographs, Carnival costumes and an interactive float area, showcasing the traditions and heritage of Mobile’s Carnival celebrations.
With its historic significance, vibrant parades and welcoming community atmosphere, Mobile Mardi Gras offers residents and visitors an opportunity to experience a unique part of American cultural heritage.
