For the first time since 1995, both the men’s and women’s open division champions successfully defended their titles, as Kenyans John Korir and Sharon Lokedi led a historically fast race. Korir used Heartbreak Hill to his advantage once again, blitzing a 4:42 mile up the incline to leave world champion Alphonce Felix Simbu and 2021 Boston winner Benson Kipruto behind. Korir’s 1:00:02 second half split was by far the fastest half marathon clocking in race history, helping him secure the win and a new course record of 2:01:52, breaking Geoffrey Mutai’s 15-year-old mark of 2:03:02. Behind Korir, Simbu and Kipruto also finished under 2:03, while the USA’s Zouhair Talbi ran 2:03:45 for fifth place – the fastest marathon time ever recorded by an American. Lokedi took control of the women’s race in the final 5K, separating from Loice Chemnung, Irine Cheptai, and Mary Ngugi-Cooper. Lokedi’s 2:18:51 was the second-fastest winning time in women’s race history, only behind her course record 2:17:22. Chemnung finished second in 2:19:35 and Ngugi-Cooper third in 2:20:07, moving to #5 and #7 on the race’s all-time list. Jess McClain crossed fifth in 2:20:49, the fastest time by an American ever on this course. She was top American woman for the second straight year.
