The Alaska Bald Eagle Festival is an annual wildlife and nature celebration held in Haines, in the Chilkat Valley. The festival coincides with the seasonal gathering of bald eagles along the Chilkat River, where they feed on a late run of chum salmon. The surrounding Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve provides an important habitat for these birds and is recognised for its large concentrations of bald eagles.
The festival offers visitors opportunities to observe eagles in their natural environment while learning about their behaviour, habitat, conservation and the ecological importance of the Chilkat River. Guided field trips take participants to viewing areas along the river, accompanied by knowledgeable guides and naturalists.
The programme includes educational presentations, photography workshops, storytelling, art displays, family activities and special events. The American Bald Eagle Foundation hosts activities that introduce visitors to birds of prey and wildlife conservation. Visitors can also learn about the foundation’s resident ambassador birds and its work in environmental education.
The opening ceremony includes local music, traditional cultural performances and guest presentations. The Sunday programme includes a community pancake breakfast and a festival closing celebration at the Haines Borough Public Library. The event is particularly attractive to wildlife photographers, birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, families and visitors interested in Alaska’s wildlife.
