Christmas by Candlelight 2026
Christmas by Candlelight 2026 is Old Sturbridge Village’s annual holiday celebration, transforming its 1830s New England setting with candlelight, Christmas trees, music, historical demonstrations, seasonal food, and horse-drawn rides. The 2026 edition runs on select dates from November 27 through December 27 and combines festive spectacle with the history of Christmas traditions.
The experience
The event is designed as an indoor-and-outdoor evening stroll through the historic Village. Visitors can follow the illuminated Christmas Tree Trail, meet Santa, hear stories and live music, warm up by a bonfire, take horse-drawn carryall rides, and see traditional crafts including blacksmithing, pottery, and tin work; food and seasonal drinks are available for purchase.
History behind the holidays
A distinctive feature is the historical interpretation behind familiar customs. Costumed historians explore how traditions such as Christmas trees, stockings, toys, gift-giving, gingerbread, nutcrackers, and carols developed, rather than presenting Christmas as though it were universally celebrated in 1830s New England. The featured international tradition for 2026 is Christmas in Sweden.
2026 dates and hours
Regular event nights are November 27–29; December 4–6, 11–13, 18–20, 23, 26, and 27, generally from 2:00–8:00 p.m. Special Candlelight Thursdays take place December 10 and 17 from 4:00–8:00 p.m., with $12 admission; December 6 is designated ASL Night. Tickets are date-specific, with timed arrival blocks used to spread out entry.
What makes it distinctive
Christmas by Candlelight is more than a conventional holiday-lights display because the living-history setting is part of the attraction: historic buildings, interpreters, working crafts, music, food, and changing Christmas traditions are woven into the evening. The museum advises visitors to expect substantial walking, dress for winter weather, and plan for the program to continue in light rain or snow; free parking is available at the Village.
