The Wisconsin State Fair is an annual 11-day festival celebrating Wisconsin agriculture, food, entertainment, competitions, and family traditions at State Fair Park in West Allis. Dating to 1851, it is one of the state’s longest-running major events and has drawn more than one million visitors in recent years.

What makes it distinctive

The fair combines a traditional agricultural exposition with a large modern entertainment festival. Thousands of animals and exhibitors, agricultural demonstrations, horticultural and culinary competitions, dozens of entertainment stages, shopping, and amusement rides share the nearly 200-acre State Fair Park.

Signature experiences

Food is a major part of the identity, particularly Wisconsin cheese and dairy. The Original Cream Puff has been sold at the fair since 1924, with nearly 400,000 typically consumed annually; other staples include cheese curds and an ever-changing collection of unconventional fair foods. SpinCity adds more than 50 rides and 30 games, alongside landmarks such as the Giant Slide and SkyGlider.

Agriculture at its core

Despite the concerts and midway atmosphere, agriculture remains central. Ag Village hosts hundreds of shows and exhibits featuring thousands of animals and their exhibitors, while educational programs cover farming, renewable energy, and activities such as milking demonstrations. Grand Champion Hall showcases horticulture, crafts, textiles, and culinary competitions.

A long Wisconsin tradition

The inaugural fair took place in Janesville in 1851 and subsequently moved among Wisconsin cities before establishing its permanent West Allis home in 1892. Its history has mirrored broader changes in American life—from farm machinery and early aviation demonstrations to wartime programs, popular music, and modern food trends.
